Ledger.com/start — Set up Ledger Live, protect your crypto, and begin staking
This page guides you through the essential steps to get started with your Ledger hardware wallet, install Ledger Live, safely manage accounts and tokens, and opt into staking where available. Follow these instructions precisely to protect your private keys and ensure your digital assets remain under your control.
Why use a Ledger hardware wallet?
A hardware wallet stores private keys offline in a secure chip, making it far more resistant to malware and online attacks than software-only wallets. Ledger devices (Nano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X and later models) provide a robust combination of convenience and security for holding, sending, receiving, and staking crypto assets.
Give yourself full custody
Only you hold the recovery phrase — Ledger never does. Your seed phrase is the last line of defense; store it safely.
Hardware-level security
Protected by a Secure Element (SE) chip and a Ledger OS designed for minimal attack surface.
Ledger Live app
Manage multiple accounts, swap tokens, check portfolio value, and access staking features from Ledger Live.
Staking & earnings
Participate in staking for supported assets to earn rewards while keeping private keys offline.
Step-by-step: Get started in minutes
Inspect the device packaging and tamper-evident seals. Only start with a brand-new Ledger or a previously verified trusted device. Never accept a pre-initialized device from someone else.
Download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website (ledger.com/start) and install it on your desktop or mobile device. Ledger Live walks you through firmware setup and account creation.
Set a secure PIN on the device. Ledger will display a 24-word recovery phrase — write this on the provided recovery sheet. Store that sheet offline in a safe place. Do not photograph, copy to cloud, or share it.
Open Ledger Live, install cryptocurrency apps (e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum) to your device, and add accounts to start receiving and sending funds with full confirmation on the device itself.
If you want to stake assets, review supported coins in Ledger Live and follow the on-screen steps. Staking requires a compatible account and sometimes a lock-up period — read the details before participating.
